Nature Diary Archive – May 2010
31 May 2010 - Braunton Marsh
After several hours in the field over the last couple of days, this Sedge Warbler is all I've photgraphed. Oh, and this Maybug, which almost missed its month. It was so massive that, unfortunately, I only got 3 shots of it before it fell into the hawthorn, unable to cling to this twig.

25 May 2010 - Berrow, Somerset
Lots of waders on Berrow Beach at the moment, including these Sanderling in a variety of plumages, as well as Dunlin, Ringed Plover and a couple of Whimbrel.
18 May 2010 - Shapwick Heath NNR, Somerset
Another dodgy photo, but this is my first of a Garden Warbler so I have stuck it on here anyway. Having gone to Shapwick to find some Hobbies and maybe a Bittern to photograph, I ended up learning the differences between Blackcap and Garden Warbler song whilst listening to a booming Bittern and wishing that the two distant Hobbies would come closer. I've had worse evenings.
17 May 2010 - Bathpool, Taunton
An evening walk to visit the Sand Martin colony at Bathpool found it in full flight. Looking at this fairly ropey picture, you wouldn't think that there were tons of them zipping all around me! Also, this Sedge Warbler was a little distant for a decent photo, cleverly choosing a nest site on the opposite side of the river from the footpath.
9 May 2010 - Ilfracombe
Wheatear - one of three on the Capstone this morning. Also two purple sands still here.
1 May 2010 - Ilfracombe

This Goldcrest seems to be nesting in the garden at the back of ours (barely acceptable shots as they were taken at 7pm).
1 May 2010 - Ilfracombe
Loads of marine mammal activity off Wildersmouth Beach today, with plenty of Harbour Porpoises as well as a Grey Seal being mobbed by Herring Gulls.
